One girls DIY restoration of a cottage.

As far as possible we, me and MeWally, want an old age with low, or no, utility bills. We also happen to be stingey with money and will make as much eco stuff as we can and build it all into our tiny house.

So we'll have a comfortable home that's cheap to make and to run. RESULT!!

Dub Dub

MeWally went on EBAY and picked up this little beauty. He got it from Germany as the ones on the UK site were a lot more expensive. He had to grapple with German and the vendor with English; neither of them could speak a foreign language! Some how they did the deal and here it is.

Smart, in a RETRO kinda way.

It suits the bus well. The IPOD LEAD arrived today and needs to be fitted. The lead cost about 2 quid - bargain.

Dub Dub

Hey look we've got a button in the bus. I think it's to call the BUTLER.

MeWally says it's to turn on the water - OO-ER-MISSUS!

We've a little pump down under - I feel I'm digging a hole for myself here - press the button and the pump kicks in. Water flows out of the tap. Well that's the theory, we've not yet tested it.

So here it is, the interior. Its getting there. MeWally's covered the panel under the seat with what looks like a condom. It'll stay that way until we seal the panel so that it's washable.

On the whole, it's almost use-able. We'll have to go on a test trip in a couple of weeks.

VW Camper Bus

MeWally spent the tail end of Saturday fitting the new fridge into the little bus and last weekend working on fitting the cooker.

It's beginning to look habitable.

Dub Dub - Sunday 10.4.11

I've found these shots of the Dub Dub lurking in the un-up-loaded-place.

Thought you might like to see them, they're a bit boring - unless you're into this sort of thing and as this is a bit of an restoration, I thought this might be the place to record our efforts.

MeWally replaced the 'kick boards that hide the technical stuff between the dash board and the floor. He cut each piece him self. I doubt they'll stay white for long.

The panel under the rock and roll bed was horrible and showed up a gap in the side cupboard. It looked a proper mess. The new one is in beech finished plywood and is set forward about 6ins. Looks neat and tidy.

The tall cupboard had been dumped in the back of the bus and a rather tatty, low box had been fitted in its' place. He's put the original cupboard back into it's original place. It's a little wardrobe!

MeWally has also stripped all the paint off the cupboards, restoring them to their original finish. The Beech finished wood we've chosen is not a perfect match, so we've experimented with lime wax and it changes the tone to a closer match.

There's a fair bit wrong with the body work.

Ratty by name, Ratty by nature..

Oswax - Friday 21.4.11

We haven't stopped all work on the house,

Oswax
rather, it's been a slow, layer by layer process of protecting the wood. The staircase will, we think, be naked, so we needed to protect it. At 10% of the cost of this run of steps, Oswax may be stupidly expensive, but it was recommended by MEACO, the joiners when they came over to measure up for the next section of steps. It looks as if there'll be enough to do the 2 flights of stairs, so maybe it's not that costly over-all.

4 coats later and I must admit it looks and feels fantastic.

Let's hope it's robust and waterproof, as promised.

Ass Through The Glass - Sunday 3.4.11

We make no bones about it - our house NEEDS RESTORATION.

Today we had 3 steps forwards and one step back. MeWally bent down to nail the sheet of chip board in place - to give us a temporary landing - and stuck his ass though the window.

If the house looked rough before, it  looks really rough now!

Finally - We Have Half A Staircase - Sunday 3.4.11

Look at me! I'm on the stairs!!

They're attached. nice and secure,

but not too safe, there's a big drop right down to the ground floor.

MeWally thought a landing would be nice, so he went to FOCUS and picked up a sheet of floor boarding to make a temporary one. It's still a bit exposed up there. The top step ends in mid air ..... must bear that in mind if I walk down them in my sleep. It's a long drop!
